————————

So – what do I think? Well, it’s a lot more MLS-based than I’d hoped. I don’t understand why Jeremiah White (AGF Aarhus) was left off the list in favor of guys like Santino Quaranta and Logan Pause.

Where is Zak Whitbread? Danny Szetela? Sal Zizzo? Preston Zimmerman? Jose Francisco Torres?

I don’t understand the choices here, and frankly, I’m not happy about them.

So what kind of lineup should we expect? I’d take this as my first, shoot-from-the-hip guess:

Ching       Davies

Adu

Rogers                    Holden

Beckerman

Pearce                                Cherundolo

Conrad         Goodson

Perkins

Considering that Mexico and Canada are also sending “B” lineups, this isn’t the worst lineup ever. But, it’s nowhere near what I had hoped we’d send. Pretty disappointing.

  1. Looks like Bradley just wiped anyone who’s played meaningful minutes in the confed cup withthe exception of Davies.

I’d love to know the reason behind Torres’ exclusion as well as Szetela’s. Bradley just continues to impress with his decision making : \

    • Torres had an agreement with Pachuca that he would go to the Confederations Cup, but decline an invite to the Gold Cup. Their season starts July 24th in Mexico, so that makes more sense.

It’s also why Michael Orozco was not called in.

  2. That’s unfortunate because I’d really like to see Torres play some more.

  3. Quaranta should start. He is better than every midfielder on the list other than Holden.

  4. Expanding on my previous comment, here’s the line-up I want to see:

    Perkins

    Dolo–Marshall–Parkhurst–Pearce

    ———–Beckerman————-
    —–Holden——Arnaud——–

    Quaranta———Adu————
    ————-Davies—————

We need to get it through our heads that there is NO NEED for a “holding striker.” Davies up top with Tino and Adu for support as withdrawn strikers/attacking MFers will be much more successful than having Dolo hit long balls up to Ching all day.

Why am I so hot on Quaranta? Well, he is unquestionably DC United’s most important contributor this season so far, has a work ethic exceeded by not one other guy on this squad, is tied for second in MLS in assists and also has 3 goals, his crosses are ridiculous, he can take set pieces, and he gets back to defend as well as any attacking middie/striker in the world. Everyone who is writing him off is sorely mistaken. He is clearly better than the likes of Evans and Rogers, who are his peers and whom he has had far more success than this year. Rogers has been nonexistant for Columbus, while Tino just schooled Evans in Seattle on national television last week. He should be starting.

  5. Thanks for the write-ups Kevin. Hope we get to see Quaranta on the field.
