USA v. Grenada – Live Blogging

Freddy Adu and the USMNT are set to take on a Grenada team looking to shock the region.

Grenada will be without two of their key players – Shalrie Joseph and Jason Roberts – so it’s going to be an uphill battle for the Caribbean side.

The USA, on the other hand, is the tournament favorite despite bringing a “reserve” side filled with fringe starters like Freddy Adu, Brian Ching, Charlie Davies, and Steve Cherundolo, as well as a slew of MLS starters like Stuart Holden, Kyle Beckerman, and Jimmy Conrad.

We’re about an hour from kickoff, so lineups should be coming online shortly. For now, I’ll just make my lineup prediction:

Perkins

Goodson   Conrad

Cherundolo                                                Pearce

Beckerman

Holden                            Rogers

Adu

Davies     Ching

———————–

And the Official Starting Lineup is (soccernet has the wrong one up):

Davies

Adu

Rogers                        Holden

Pause   Beckerman

Pearce                                               Cherundolo

Marshall   Goodson

Perkins

Some interesting choices, namely opting for the twin towers in Goodson and Marshall at the back (anyone projecting Parkhurst to start was dreaming). No Brian Ching is a HUGE surprise for anyone that has followed this team for some time.

I’m not too fond of using Pause and Beckerman in this game, as I’d rather see us get a 2nd striker up with Davies – Quaranta or Cooper preferably.

Or, instead bring in Quaranta as a wing and move Holden to Logan Pause’s spot.

FREDDY!!!!!!!! 1-0 USA!!!

Really nice run by Rogers into the box, absolutely torching his defender with some nice cutbacks.

Very nice finish from Freddy as well with his right foot.

It’s really tough to watch us have to play on turf. It’s just a disgrace in my opinion that these matches aren’t all on grass.

In his first international cap, Stuart Holden nets his first goal!!!! 2-0 USA!!!!

Halftime

Adu and Davies are proving to be a tough combo up top, as are Holden and Rogers on the wings.

The turf really makes passing and individual skills a mess as it slows everything down to a crawl it seems.

I’d like to see us get Holden into the middle, as he clearly is pushing himself inside. Logan Pause looks a bit out of place so far, especially since Beckerman looks like he deserves some call-ups to the full squad. Kid looks like he’s a more athletic, more skilled version of Mastroeni. What about that left-footed strike? I didn’t expect that!

The center-half tandem looks shaky, but I think they look a bit uncomfortable on the pitch more than anything. Marshall and Goodson look solid, but I wouldn’t be opposed to Conrad playing in place of either.

Perkins made a good save on the only time he got tested.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Quaranta come in for Pause, moving Holden inside next to Beckerman.

This Grenada team doesn’t have much skill or talent, but they play hard. I wouldn’t mind seeing what they look like with Shalrie Joseph and Jason Roberts on the field.

Nothin’ doin’ in the 2nd half so far. A few good American runs, but pretty reserved play so far.

There’s only one Charlie Davies!! 4-0 USA!!!

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention just how awful this keeper is for Grenada. Wow.

Not much from team USA since the subs came in, though Freddy Adu and Robbie Rogers have been everywhere.

————-

Full Time. 4-0 USA.

Not the most exciting of games, to be honest. We won, though, and a much better Honduras team awaits on Wednesday.

I won’t do much of a write-up on this game, but I’ll post some player ratings tomorrow.
