Parkhurst, Cherundolo head back to Europe

According to the USMNT Blog, Michael Parkhurst (FC Nordsjaelland) and Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96) are headed back to Europe.

That means 5 of the 30 “rostered” players are not with the team – Jon Busch, Freddy Adu, Benny Feilhaber, Parkhurst, and Cherundolo.

So far, there is no word on whether or not Charlie Davies will head back to Europe too, or if Sochaux will allow him to stay with the team. My guess is that he’s either gone this week or next, but he won’t be here through the finals. I can’t see Sochaux letting their new signing miss that much acclimation time, especially given that Davies will be making the trip to Azteca on Aug. 12.

With Dolo leaving, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jonathan Bornstein brought in, moving Heath Pearce over to the right-hand side. Otherwise, we’re left with Jay Heaps or Brad Evans on the right – and I’m not sure anyone wants that.

Parkhurst’s departure means that the 3 other center-halves are fully fit and we’ll probably see a Conrad\Marshall or Conrad\Goodson pairing on Saturday.

  1. I’m not so upset about Parkhurst leaving, but we could really use Dolo in the latter stages of this tournament. All our backs are now either relatively untested (Evans) or tested and deemed failures by most (Bornstein, Heaps).

  2. Oh, I completely forgot about Heath Pearce! Still, the lack of depth is disturbing.
