Donovan to Paris?

According to rumors floating around French sport sites, Landon Donovan is poised to sign with Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain (or PSG).

Good move? I’d say so. PSG have good resources, are partially owned by 2 American investment groups, and play in a league suited to Donovan’s shifty style of play.

PSG boast a strong squad with legendary French international Claude Makelele captaining the side, along with standouts like Ludovic Giuly, Guillaume Hoarau, and Gregory Coupet. There is a small Charlie Davies connection in that PSG bought Mevlüt Erdinç from Sochaux, clearing the way for them to buy Davies.

With a solid anchoring midfielder like Makelele in the middle, new manager Antoine Kombouaré – who moved over from Valenciennes this season – has a good deal of freedom to move players around in the attack. Kombouaré’s Valenciennes teams played fluid football and he would likely be able to make great use of a player with Donovan’s skill set.

While a lot could change for PSG between now and the January window, they could definitely use a wing\forward to play opposite of Giuly, especially one with speed to reach the byline.

For Donovan’s sake, I hope this is the move he makes, as it’d be a better situation for him than moving to Livorno.

  1. Other reports I’ve seen seem to indicate this is the idea of the ownership group which has LA ties. Apparently the new coach is not on board with the idea. If this is true then Donovan should stay away from another Monaco-Adu situation. Can you confirm this?
